IFTA Second-Quarter Fuel Tax Returns Due July 31; FleetCollect App Automates State-by-State Mileage for Owner-Operators Filing Nationwide
GPS-based tracking replaces paper trip sheets as carriers across the country face the quarterly International Fuel Tax Agreement filing deadline.
CARSON, Calif. — July 11, 2026 — With the second-quarter International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) return due July 31, 2026, FleetCollect is reminding owner-operators and small fleets that its GPS-based app automates the state-by-state mileage calculation at the center of every quarterly filing — the step where manual records most often go wrong.
IFTA requires carriers to report the miles they drove and the fuel they purchased in each state and Canadian province every quarter, then reconcile the two to determine what is owed or credited. For small operators without back-office staff, that has long meant reconstructing a quarter of driving from paper trip sheets and a folder of fuel receipts — a slow, error-prone process, and one that surfaces in a fuel-tax audit.
Automatic, GPS-based mileage
The FleetCollect app runs in the background and uses GPS to allocate miles to each jurisdiction as a driver travels. Trips start with a single tap, mileage is captured continuously rather than estimated after the fact, and drivers log fuel purchases as they go. At the end of the quarter, the app compiles a finished IFTA report broken down by state and province, so operators file from an organized, audit-ready summary instead of a shoebox of receipts.
"IFTA is a quarterly scramble of fuel receipts and mileage math for most small carriers, and that scramble is exactly where the errors and the audits come from," said Herman Armstrong, founder of FleetCollect. "We automated the part that causes the mistakes — the miles — so the report is accurate and ready when the deadline arrives, not something you dread every three months."
Ahead of the July 31 deadline
The IFTA quarterly deadlines fall on April 30, July 31, October 31, and January 31. Carriers who have tracked their second-quarter miles in FleetCollect can generate the Q2 report now; those still working from paper can begin automated tracking to be ready for the third-quarter filing due October 31.
FleetCollect's IFTA app is available on iPhone to carriers nationwide, with per-driver pricing that scales with fleet size. FleetCollect also offers a DOT Driver Qualification File compliance portal and a nationwide DOT drug and alcohol testing consortium, giving small carriers fuel-tax, driver-file, and testing compliance from a single platform.
