What Is a DOT Number and Why Does It Matter?

Every commercial motor carrier, freight broker, and hazardous materials transporter operating in the United States must register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and obtain a unique USDOT number. This number serves as a digital fingerprint that the DOT uses to monitor and track a carrier's safety performance, compliance history, and crash record.

The USDOT number is required for any vehicle that transports passengers or hauls cargo in interstate commerce, or carries hazardous materials in quantities requiring a safety permit. Carriers must update their registration every two years through the MCS-150 biennial update, and failure to do so can result in deactivation of their operating authority.

How to Use a DOT Number Lookup

Our DOT lookup tool queries the FMCSA Census database in real time. Simply enter a carrier's USDOT number in the search box above and the tool returns the carrier's complete registration profile including their legal name, DBA, physical location, number of power units and drivers, operating authority status, and official safety rating.

This data is valuable for several use cases:

  • Shippers and brokers use DOT lookups to vet carriers before tendering freight. An inactive status or Unsatisfactory safety rating is an immediate red flag.
  • Drivers check prospective employers to verify they hold valid authority and maintain a clean safety record before signing on.
  • Fleet managers monitor their own DOT profile and track competitors in their market.
  • Insurance agents pull carrier data to assess risk profiles and fleet sizes during the quoting process.

Understanding Safety Ratings

The FMCSA assigns one of three safety ratings after conducting a compliance review of a carrier's operations:

Satisfactory

The carrier has adequate safety management controls in place.

Conditional

The carrier does not have adequate safety management controls. Corrective action is needed.

Unsatisfactory

The carrier does not have adequate safety management controls and poses a risk to public safety.

Not all carriers have a safety rating. Unrated carriers have simply not yet undergone a compliance review. For a deeper dive into how the FMCSA evaluates carrier safety, see our guide on CSA scores and the 7 BASIC categories.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a USDOT number?
A USDOT number is a unique identifier assigned by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to every commercial motor carrier operating in interstate commerce. It is used to track safety information, compliance reviews, crash investigations, and audits.
How do I look up a DOT number for free?
Enter any USDOT number into the search box above and our tool will instantly pull the carrier's registration details, fleet size, and safety rating directly from the FMCSA Census database. It is 100% free with no account required.
What information does a DOT number lookup show?
A DOT number lookup returns the carrier's legal name, DBA name, physical address, operating authority status, safety rating (Satisfactory, Conditional, or Unsatisfactory), total power units, total drivers, crash rate, and the date the carrier was added to the FMCSA database.
What is the difference between a DOT number and an MC number?
A USDOT number is required for all commercial vehicles in interstate commerce and is used for safety tracking. An MC (Motor Carrier) number is a separate operating authority number required for for-hire carriers transporting regulated commodities. Most carriers need both.
How often is the FMCSA Census data updated?
The FMCSA updates its Census database on a rolling basis as carriers file their MCS-150 biennial updates, register new authority, or undergo compliance reviews. Our tool caches results for 24 hours to balance freshness with performance.
Can I use this tool to verify a carrier before hiring them?
Yes. Shippers, brokers, and freight coordinators regularly use DOT number lookups to verify a carrier's operating status, fleet size, and safety record before tendering loads. You can also check their full inspection history using our Safety Score Checker tool.
